Academy Introduction

The exclusive Summer Academy on Deep Seabed Mining (DSM), one of the series of Academy of Theory and Practice on the Law of the Sea, is hosted in July by the Center for the Rule of Ocean Law Studies and Center for Polar and Deep Ocean Development (PDOD), Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This intensive two-week summer academy will focus on the development of science and technology for DSM and the interaction between legal regimes governing the activities in the Area. The featured academy aims to provide comprehensive knowledge and unique insight to the participants (i.e. active and potential deep seabed operators, scholars and students) to promote understanding of latest development of science, technology and legal affairs of the DSM activities in the Area. Carefully selected lectures, seminars and site visits to ocean research institutions and agencies in nearby cities will be organized to provide the participant with real knowledge and experiences on the scientific and technological advancement for the exploration and exploitation of marine and seabed resources, a thorough understanding of the interaction between science, law policy and environment. 

Who are the organizers?

The core organizer of the 2018 Summer Academy is the Center for Polar and Deep Ocean Development of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). The Center is among the first-class research institutions in China focusing on various aspects of DSM from a multidisciplinary approach to facilitate the research progress and policy formation of law, policy and strategy for China’s participation of the relevant activities. More importantly, this 2018 Summer Academy is proudly sponsored by the Endowment Fund of International Seabed Authority (ISA). The Endowment Fund provides financial aids to participants from developing countries. China Ocean Mineral Resources R & D Association (COMRA) and China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) also support this academy.

Who should apply?

The tailored Summer Academy is dedicated to specialists, practitioners from deep seabed mining sector, scholars and university students interested in the general law of the sea theory and state practice. It is a guaranteed best available training course with unique opportunity to directly interact with the experts of the field. All devoted participants to the future course of the oceans and seas are welcome!

As the academy will be conducted in English with restricted number of seats to ensure better interaction and quality, plus some seats will be reserved for participants from developing countries sponsored by the Endowment Fund of ISA, and delegates from the workshop sponsors, those who intend to apply for this last free academy have to act promptly to secure the space and a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of the academy.
