On 26 December 2012, the Republic of Korea submitted to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, in accordance with Article 76, paragraph 8, of the Convention, information on the limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of its territorial sea is measured.
It is noted that the Convention entered into force for the Republic of Korea on 28 February 1996.
The note verbale accompanying the submission states that “[t]his submission is a partial submission concerning only a portion of the outer limits of the continental shelf of [the Republic of Korea] beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which its territorial sea is measured in the East China Sea. Therefore, this submission of the Republic of Korea is made without prejudice to any future submission by [the Republic of Korea] defining the outer limits of its continental shelf in other areas."
In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Commission, a communication is being circulated to all Member States of the United Nations, as well as States Parties to the Convention, in order to make public the executive summary of the Submission, including all charts and coordinates contained in that summary.
The consideration of the Submission made by the Republic of Korea will be included in the provisional agenda of the thirty-second session of the Commission to be held in New York from 15 July to 30 August 2013.
Upon completion of the consideration of the Submission, the Commission will issue recommendations pursuant to Article 76 of the Convention.
